A distant relative has passed away, leaving her littlewoods account number but no statements - can anyone tell me what it means when you have an X at the beginning of your account number? It's just an X followed by 7 digits.

It doesn't mean that she had a high credit clearance, does it? I'm dreading phoning Littlewoods and getting a bill for who knows what!

Please tell me it meant she had to pay upfront..!!

Oh, and if you know their phone number it would help too!

Thanks!

First of all I'm sorry for your loss and send my condolences.

Secondly don't panic the X on the account just means that your relative must of had a Littlewoods Extra account, which is a sister company of Littlewoods, this means the account would have to be cleared withing a 3/6 month period, instead of 20/50 weeks. Just give them a call on 08705 22 66 77 quoting the account number and your circumstances and I'm sure they will able to help you.

Littlewoods includes several catalogues and shops and usually the start of an account number is the 'identifier', same as the first digits of a credit or debit card. Can't say for certain but I'm guessing that the X is the identifier for a Littlewoods Extra account.

An account number is permenant and doesn't change based on the status of an account. If an account becomes past-due, in default etc then the computer system will 'flag' the account as such but not change the account number.

Phoning Littlewoods won't resolve matters as they're only allowed to speak to the account holder. There are of course procedures for dealing with the account of a deceased person and this normally involves the executor of the estate submitting formal proof that the account holder is deceased.

Phone Littlewoods, explain to them what has happened and ask what their procedure is - they'll probably give you a department and an address for the executor to write to. The number for Littlewoods Extra is 08457 57-34-57 and for accounts the number is 08457 97-97-97

As for who is responsible for any debt - only the person or people named as account holders are responsible and as store accounts are issued singularly then your relative is the only person liable to repay the debt. Because your relative is deceased any outstanding amounts will be paid from the estate (assets owned solely by your relative - property, savings etc).

There's a 'pecking order' for who gets paid first, store accounts are fairly low down in the list of priorities. Full details are here... http://www.direct.gov.uk/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ManagingDebt/DebtsAndArrears/DebtsAndArrearsArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=10013093&chk=GeJ8kQ

There is nothing for you to worry about, you won't be liable for any outstanding debt unless you've acted as guarantor and unless you're the executor of the estate then it will be up to someone else to deal with.

I don't know what the X means, but I do know that if somebody passes away owing money, it is taken out of the deceased person's estate....(any money or property etc that they left.) Relatives do not have pay outstanding debts.

If there is no estate, then the debt is written off by the creditor. Can't find a phone no. in my book sorry.....try googling UK only?
