my doctor said it was the herpes virus (cold sores) however the tablets he gave did not have an effect? the lumps do not seem to be spreading, they do not itch or are sore etc, however they do tingle in a cold sore way occasionally. I have tried salt water but they seem unwilling to go. any ideas what to try or do?

to answer some replys, the lumps are not from oral sex, chewing tobacco or anything else like that.

due to the lumps i have cease ALL sexual activity.

my doctor has now referred me to a oral hygeine secialist.

i have had the lumps for about a month now and they have not grown in size or reddened, but i see no signs of them getting better either.

i have also recently had what i call a proper cold sore on my top lip, which was treated with aclivor cream an has gone. so if that as a cold sore an went, why did the aclivor tablets the doctor gave me for what he said is a cold sore infection still there??

I am starting to notice (i think as it could be paranoia) the same small white lumps around the outside of the lips, and on the skin area at the side of my nose leading up to the eye area. occasionaly one or both of my eyes start to sting severely for no reason.

Try using an alcohol based mouth rinse - failing that use whisky!

Almost certainly herpes virus. Be aware that there are many types of herpes (complex, simplex etc.) all of which give different people different symptoms.

Zovirax tablets should help but it may take a while. Most of the other suggested cures have no real affect e.g. saltwater.

A common cause of this is playing someone else's music instrument like harp (harmonica) or clarinet.

Sorry to not offer too much help but stick to the tablets and grind it out and it should go within a few days.

You don't say how long they've been there but if it's cold sores then they should go away within about 2 weeks. If it has been longer than that then check back with your dentist and let them check them again. More than likely, they are just cold sores. Don't panic. Good luck and meanwhile you can use Abreva or camphophenique to help with any pain. Also they sell something called Peroxyl or Rincinol (over the counter--available in US, not sure about UK) which you can rinse with to help while it heals. Anything you take isn't really going to shorten the course of it but it may make it less painful. Take care and check with your dentist if you are worried.

ok...that does sound serious...go see a dermatologist - insist on it. doctors tend to have a god complex, and forget that they are not specialists. insist on seeing a qualified professional - dermatologist. also,
look at dermnet new zealand - a great resource for skin disorders!
good luck!
