red food coloring with a little blue in it to make it look more like human blood

add enough water to make the amount you need

then bring it to a boil.

take 2 TBS cornstarch and 1/2 cup water mixed togther.

add this to the boiling liquid. stir quickly

let it boil again. If it looks thick enough let it cool.

if not do the cornstarch thing again....

it will be a little thicker when it cools and dont worry the cornstarch will be clear when its cooked in.

the simplest way to create artificial blood is using a karo syrup base (corn syrup) or if you need it quite thin use inexpensive pancake syrup (gotten at a store like smart and final) then add about quarter then amount of a liquid laundry detergent (to help keep from staining.) add red food colouring till your color achieved is desired, i also use a bit of carmel colouring for depth. you may also tweak it about by adding a few drops of yellow or blue to adjust the final colouring. if you need more opacity add a small amount of warmed, (it helps the two products to mix,) coffee creamer.
now if this is designed to leave a stain as well as fresh blood, thin the formula with real lemon lemon juice. it causes it to dry with a bit of a browny tinge
and if it is on skin and or clothing use a foaming type shaving creme to remove (putting it on the area before the blood is applied will also help from staining
if you need any further asst let me know

I forwarded your question to my brother who worked as a makeup artist on T3. If he has access to the Internet, where he's currently working, hopefully he will be able to answer.
