I gained quite a bit of weight on my stomach as you don't have any periods whilst on it. I also had a very long and painful period when I stopped taking it, by long I mean about 10 weeks!! Think carefully before having it I would recommend the pill over the injection anyday!!

Hi not a girl! but have been an Gynae doc for 6 months.
Have given this contraceptive to many, many people and most are extreemly happy with it. One of the most complained about side effects is the initial irregular bleeding, but this settles with time. My patients love the fact that you only have to remeber it once evry 11 weeks and that after the initial time your periods can go away.
Other potential side effects are similar to any hormonal contracption like the pill, e.g mood problems, bloating. One thing to remermber is that return to fertility can take 12 months.
For an excellant advice sheet about this contaception see link below.

The approval of depo provera as a contraceptive is in spite of serious side effects. When you take the shot you lose bone mass, and that bone mass is not replaced when the drug is out of your system. The longer you use depo provera, the greater the bone loss. If you are young, in your teens, it is an especially bad idea, you need to be gaining bone mass. Other than that, do a search on Depo Provera, read what other women have said.

judging by all the answers here there are quite a few side effects. i have known a few people who have taken the shot and have done just fine, however the most complaints i have heard have been weight gain and irregular periods. it really depends on the person and the upside is that you don't have to remember a pill everyday. the shot does deplete bone mass so you will need to take a calcium supplement with vitamin D, the nurses will explain what to buy should you decide to get the shot. good luck.

I think it affects everyone in different ways, although I would never consider it. But just because it doesn't agree with others it may be different for you sweetie. The only thing to do is speak to your GP and give it a shot. If you don't like it, just come off it and go back on the pill. I dint believe there's any life threatening side effects it's just like anything, if you don't try you wont know xx

What Mizzie said. I was also lactating while being given it, and for nearly a year after stopping. It took nearly 4 years for my periods to return to something that resembled normal. I took only 3 injections. I gained nearly 40 lbs.

i know of someone who has had injection contraception. it was supposed to wear off after 3 months. she didnt get her period for 3 months or so....and that wasnt normal. so she went to her doctor after 3 months and the doctor gave her some meds for her period to come and now she's normal.

YES! plz dont do it. the side effects r not worth it. after about 6mos. i stopped getting a period completly- AWESOME right? NO- think about it? all that crap is the UN NEEDED shedding of ur uterus- it comes out 4 a reaseon. thats y we have periods!! but when u have the shot- ur body retains that yucky stuff. UH OH! i was on that for 3 years, when i started having cramping and spotting. my OB/GYN told me(after painful biopsies and blood work) my body was completly depleited of estrogen!! Ya know, the stuff that makes us women. stick 2 the pill, yea, its got side effects, but not as serious as the depo shot. take care of urself- uve only got 1 body- worship it, treat it well. best of luck 2 u sweetie.

I had the Depo injection a few years ago, it didn't work for me though, not in the way of being a contrceptive, it worked fine in that way, it was how I felt while I was on it, it made me very moody.
