I mean the bad language and improper use of english, awful clothes (which don't seem to be cheap, just a terrible style), heaps of tacky gold jewelery and about five children on every arm! (actually, the children are generally running down the street out of control and abusing decent members of society). How do they think this is a good way to be?

Oh and also, another point to Vanessa B, for someone so keen to correct, you should spell their correctly. It's not spelt thier.

People are like dumb sheep and others are lemmings. It's what makes the world a sick place to live.

Its called acculturation. That is, if you are brought up around a specific culture or group, that culture's values, beliefs, customs and traditions will most likely be passed on to the children. For example, "they" may look at your ways and neighborhood and ask the same questions, because thier way is the only way they know. As for the use of language, its called dialect. By the way, who are "they"?

In society today, it is popular (and easy) to conform to other people's behavior and attitude in order to fit in. We also have media to influence us. It is MUCH more difficult to be a true individual, and stand out from the crowd with your own personality, attitude, and speech. People naturally want to fit in rather than be an "outcast", so we get the "sheep" effect with the majority of society. It happens in every avenue, even politics. We get the MTV effect, the FOX News effect. People want to follow popular belief, and popular design. That's why Bush still has followers - his administration convinced people that if you don't support Bush, you don't support America - and people buy it.

It's not that people are sheep, it's about social construct and influence. Claire, I guarantee unless you live under a rock, even you take on traits and habbits of your friends, family, peer groups, society. I mean you dont go around dressed like a middle eastern, you dress like the rest of us do in western society. It may not be a specific fashion, but the basics are still there. As children we learn from our influences, and it's no different now. It’s not pathetic it’s how we live.

These people apparently want to "fit in." If they were different, the group would reject them. The group is their emotional security, like a gang.
