We need a good package and good internet coverage, BT is forever offline!

You would have to be stupid not to go for Telewest broadband.
They are offering 3 things for £30. Its Satellite, Phone and Internet.
The TV is just the basic channels plus e4 and itv 2 etc. The phone is free on weekends only and the Internet is unlimited use and is super fast. It also comes with the best anti virus, spyware and security all free of charge. I also have it and have had no problem! I know BT is ****!

Internet provider and land line provider are two completely different service.
Personally I recommend http://www.demonbroadband.uk.net/index.php?tracker=gd
For land lines, there are only handful of companies provide land line service other than BT. But none is as big as BT, and though they are the service provider, they do not physically own the line, BT owns them. You will be better off to get landline with BT.
Another side note, if you are just looking for Internet only, you don't need to active landline service, :) just a physically line.

I am a sales director of a telecoms company we only deal with business lines however for domestic lines unless you are with a cable company ultimately your line has a 95% chance of being BT whoever you go with
Best Internet provider probably someone like Demon, or Tiscali
Best package for calls and Internet probably someone like Tesco

If you are a Sky customer then you can have the internet from free, and unlimited land line calls day and night for £5.00 a month its a bargin really.
Otherwise theres a new provider called Pippex which seem pretty cheap.

NTL has a fast connection, very reliable, free net guard anti virus protection, various price plans for Internet and phone, i will not be looking anywhere else for my Internet provider ntl has what i need.
