If you're laying on your side, and you're still snoring, you must have a huge pallet or your nasal passages are extremely slim. I used to snore alot because of the second reason. I'm still planning on having surgery, but I did seem to fix the problem.
The question you'll have to answer is Are you snoring through your mouth or your nose? I mean the sound is very different. There's a very deep sawing noise coming out of nose snoring, and a snarling sound coming from the mouth. Try finding out from her which of the two it is.
If it's you mouth, then there are several things that are possible:
Even though you're sleeping on your side, what is the position of your head? You need to make sure your head is in the position as if someone were about to perform CPR on you. Head back a little, so the throat is fully open. If your nose is stopped up, or even just your sinuses (sp...sini?), you need to get them clear so you can breathe more through your nose. Maybe your pollows are too high. When you sleep, your head should be level.
If it's your nose, then your pallet could either be swollen, or your nasal passages might be too narrow. I knwo this sounds wierd, but what I started doing was wetting my finger and shoving it as far up my nose as I could, to open the pathway up a little on each side. Just to stretch it. Be gentle, because it can be painful if you're not, and cut your fingernails. If you don't want to do that extremely weird feet, try asking your doctor for ways of stretching it out. Don't go to your regular doctor, go to an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat specialist) They will cost on your insurance as Sp. OV. Usually $40 deductible. He can look right at your throat ant tell you exactly what to do...maybe even give you some industrial strips that do better than the Breathe Rites.
Also, believe it or not, a constant Ear infection can cause severe snoring. Sometimes you might have an infection for years that doesn't flare up to the point of pain and hearing loss, but glands can be swollen, the sinus behind the ear can be conjested and the tissue surrounding the ear canal can be swollen. My doctor told me a few years ago to, in addition to taking the Antibiotics, pop my ears 3 times a day for a couple of weeks to dry out the sinus and kill the bacteria that way. I used to have like 15 earaches a year. I haven't had a single one in the 6 years since.

I've had the surgery . It does work. I also had a tosillectomy at the same time, because my tonsils were blocking my airway. It was all a bit painful not but as bad as I would have thought. The major problem I had post- op was that I had a great deal of difficulty swallowing and got really dehydrated as a result -think of a sore throat from hell
As another person mentioned sleep apnea is a very real and dangerous possibility. A combination of being overweight and getting older are the root causes.
I don't know if you can avoid the surgery, that's between you and your ENT Doc. Try losing weight, a CPAP [constant positive airway pressure] mask is another possibility . If your insurance will cover it, a sleep study will provide a lot of information.

Do you wake up several times per night? If you do you may have sleep apnea. There are several types of sleep apnea but obstructive apnea can be very serious. You need to consult a Doctor or a sleep specialist.

I have heard that nasal strips work very well, they open up your nasal passages while you are sleeping.
