I got an mp3 player for my birthday and it's great! I love it!! I'd recommend you get the Sony NW-E003F. I didn't have a clue what to do with it but it's so easy to use. I think it cost around £80. It comes with software called "Sony Sonic Stage" which lets you transfer cds to it, and also music that you have downloaded. It's honestly so easy to use. To charge it, you just stick it straight into your pc (It has a built-in USB plug with a cover at the end of it). When you open the software, it will show you on a window on the left hand side all the songs you have on your pc (either downloaded or ripped from CDs) and on the right hand side it will show you what's on your mp3 player (will be blank). All you do then is select which songs you wish to transfer onto the mp3 player, click on the arrow button and it'll move them across to it and that's it!! It's a 1gb mp3 player and i have around 300 songs on it from CDs and downloads and there's still lots of room left. It's the best thing i've ever had!

Ok, to help answer I have adressed each of your points of reference to best help you.

Can you transfer the music from your CDs to the player?
--- It would not be directly no. When you put music into your computer you can "rip" the music from the CD. This means that you copy the music from the CD onto your harddrive.

If so does the software come with the player or do you have to buy it seperately?
--- No. You can use Windows Media Player to "rip" music which is standard on your computer. It will display Rip Music along the top tool bars and you can click on that which will then bring up a list of the tracks on the CD. You can then select which songs you wish to copy. They will be saved to a file, normally My Music, which is located in the C Drive of your computer.

What is an ipod?

--- An iPod is a particular brand of music player created by Apple. Strictly speaking it is not solely an MP3 player as it plays MP4 tracks too. In order to actually use an iPod you WILL need the suporting software iTunes in order to add music to the player. This software comes free either by downloading from the Apple Website or on the disc that comes with the player.

Do you recommend any models?

--- There are simply so many to chose from. Personally I am an iPod owner and have always loved the simplicity of the operating system but it really depends on what you are personally looking for. Obviously, try and stick to well known brands or do a bit of looking around at best seller lists for stores such as Dixons or Curries. You can do this online by running Google Searches and the such. Most shops online allow you to organise search results in order of popularity or how well they sell, which will you give you a better idea of what is best for you.

What should I pay for it?

--- Again, this depends on what you are looking for. How many songs you want to store on it for example.
A small mp3 player can be picked up for around £20 and will allow you to hold something along the lines of 20-30 songs. Normally, this would be a 128mb or 256mb size player.

The more mb storage space you want, the more it will cost. A 4gb player normally costs around the region of about £120. The largest players do range right up to around 60GB and costs about £350 so it is all down to personally choice about how much you want to spend for how much you want to store.

Good luck in your search.

1, yes u can tranfer music from cd-mp3. U need to rip the music files from the dics into mp3 or wma files then you can put them on the player. Most mp3 players should come with software but the like of windows media player etc will do thejob.
2, An ipod is a popular model of mp3 player, made by apple.
3, My one is made by creative and i like it, however itis getting on a bit now
4, the cost from 40-a few hundred depending on the amount of memory, type of memory (flash or hard-disc) and any other features. If its a gift u dont want to pay anythng for it.

iPods are the number 1 mp3 players... they are great as far as I'm concerned ... some people have other favorites, but most go with an iPod of some sort. They have different types to choose from. The nano's are great because they don't have moving parts inside so less likely to break in any way and they don't skip if you move around a lot, video ones do have a hard drive, so moving parts... easier to fail, and skip if you move around too much or jump around.
They come with iTunes which you can download for free off apple's site to use no matter what.

most better models have a voice recorder...and by better models i dont mean the ipod. if you want to compare them by what they do..dont go with the ipod most mp3 player are better then ipods. try to get one with an changable battery. depending on how much space will determine the price range... as long as you rip the music form the cd you should be able to put the music on the mp3 ummm the software should come with it unless it doesnt require it

it really depends on what you want try researching different mp3 players

Any MP3 you decide to buy must be able to do three things
1. When you connect to the computer via the USB it should be able to interface with your computer i.e introduce itself and install it's programme on your computer.
2. when you are connected to the computer and you put a CD in It should ask you if you want to transfer the music to your MP£
When you are connected to the net it should connect you to a music download centre where you can search and pay for music on the internet that you can buy if you wish and download into your MP3
GOOD LUCK!

I got mine on line. You can use Windows Media player to rip songs off your CDs. The you just drag and drop the files onto the player and it is ready to go.
