All you've done is switch one "downer" for another. Tylenol PM contains an antihistamine (Benadryl) which is why it helps you to fall asleep.
You should see a doctor and explain what's going on. He may give you a prescription sleep aid, but more than likely he will tell you to try some natural remedies first - cut down on caffeine, eat less sugar, eat more fruits & veggies, exercise at LEAST 4x a week, 30 minutes per day, get up earlier, go to bed when you're tired (as opposed to a set "bedtime"), and maybe see a therapist to discuss the reasons you were using alcohol in the first place.
Good for you for quitting drinking! That was a huge step and you should feel good about that! Next is trying to get things on track so you feel good about everything!

I have a hard time sleeping as well sometimes. For me, something hot like a cup of tea or hot chocolate eases me into sleep pretty well. Make sure you don't do any excercises right before bed, or housework--it'll make it harder for you to be able to fall asleep.
I have a hard time sleeping I think because I can't get my mind to slow down...it's always going a mile a minute. And Tylenol PM or any sleep-aid is just as addictive as the alcohol from before.
So I try to think about something nice I'd like to dream about (an ex-boyfriend, wink wink, lol, going to the beach, getting a massage) instead of what happened during the day. That seems to help me too.
Good luck! Hope it helps!

In addition to doing some thing to physically wear you out during the day, you should develop a bedtime ritual. This will take your body through the process of winding down (like the alcohol did). Your ritual can be anything as long as you do the same thing every night. It can consist of simply laying out you nightclothes, getting into them, and brushing your teeth or it can be an elaborate affair with all sorts of bells and whistles thrown in. It may take some time but eventually your body will be accustomed to it and you will fall asleep without difficulty most nights.
