Okay, after painstaking, exhaustive research there are 13 right handed(fielding) and 8 left handed(fielding), "full" time first basemen in MLB...

Without counting all the first basemen in the major leagues I would assume that 95-98% are left-handed ... makes it easier and saves split seconds stretching for the thrown ball.

There are more left handed first basemen due to the fact that it is the only infield position that a left hander can play

It's probably about even. There are a lot more right-handers than left-handers in the world, but lefties can only play 1B, P and OF in baseball, so they have to go somewhere. It's not a position that requires a ton of skill, so you can put your best slugger/worst fielder there regardless of which hand he throws with. It's not 95% lefties though. Albert Pujols, Justin Morneau, Jim Thome, Carlos Delgado, Jason Giambi and Paul Konerko all throw right-handed, although many of them bat lefty. A lot of those guys started their careers at other positions like 3B, which they couldn't play if they threw left-handed.
