did you mean to forget us or just got too busy? You poured your blood sweat and tears 5 years ago and vowed to be kinder to one another. Is today just Patriot Day on the calendar like Christmas or any other holiday and the rest of the year not thought of? Think back and remember how you felt about your neighbor, co-worker, fellow human. You will not change those who hate. You need to show love and kindness now while you can. Today is 9-11. It is hard to miss the fact that we are heading into the Five-Year Anniversary of "9/11." With movies like "Flight 93" and "World Trade Center," television documentaries and docu-dramas, and the numerous news reports and opinion polls, I can imagine that some people would be just as happy to let the day come and go. Part of me wants to do that same – I spent the One-Year Anniversary whale-watching off the coast of British Columbia so I wouldn't have to watch the non-stop footage and relive that painful day. This year will be different. I will remember because I want to remember. And what I will remember are the things that really count.

I will remember the light of a million candles chasing away the darkness.

I will remember the self-less bravery of those who gave their lives trying to save others.

I will remember the clogged phone lines as everyone spent the day calling family and friends, no matter where they were, just to hear their voices and make sure they were okay.

I will remember the willingness of people to donate blood; willingness so great that they were asked to come back at another time.

I will remember the swell of patriotism without politics; the seas of red, white, and blue.

I will remember people gathering despite religious differences to pray for our nation.

I will remember the purity of the children who cried for those who died, asked why "the bad people" would do this and yet were able to find hope in the future.

And I will remember a world that set aside its differences and came together in grief and support. Two days after the attacks, the French newspaper "Le Monde" ran the headline "Nous sommes tous Américains" – "We are all Americans." I want to remember that on that day, amidst so much hate and pain and loss, we were all more than that. We were all one human race.

I hope you will remember, too.
