My mom had a partial hysterectomy. They left her overies. she is 45. We have heard that she will not have to worry about going through menopause. But 21 months later she is having some symptoms, hot flash etc... Can she be going through menopause?
What are the symptoms? And is there any non-prescription medications she can take to help? Thank You

Yes! If she still has her ovaries. She can go through menopause just like any other women. Some of the symptoms are hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings. Their are several over the counter medications that she can try. Estrovent. Is one of the most popular. She should really talk to her doctor about this first before she does anything. It may not be menopause. And it is best to check with her Gynecologist.
Hope this helps. Tell her good luck
After reading your additional information. I would tell her to not go back to the doctor who did the surgery. He mis-informed her. I can not understand why he would tell her such a thing. Tell her to find a new Gyno.

just cause you get one does not mean you are not going to go through menopause! I had one when I was 28 and now I'm 32. But unfortunately I will go through it too. If I was to get a full hysterectomy then I would go right into menopause. And I also heard that having a partial with in 5-7 years you probably need the full hysterectomy. Yeah I don't look forward to that either but it is all just a part of life. I'm not sure if there is any over the counter meds to take for menopause...She needs to talk to her doctor...OBGYN not just no ordinary Dr though.good luck to her

Ovaries are the main start point for menopause and yr mum still has good chances of undergoing formal symptoms of menopause.
Symptoms include:
Massive bleeding, not necessarily during the due date , becomes very irregular when she nears 50.
Like you mentioned, Hot flashes and feeling of hotness in the body ,even though its not a fever.
Paleness and looks weak due to blood loss and hot flashes.
Irritability and mood swings cuz her hormones are in a cocktail.
Hair fall, atleast a few strands.
Loss of appetite at times, though not regularly.
Fells tired and fatigued during the day, espicially mornings even though no external pressure was delivered.
Yes, there is a way she can tackle these symtoms. Its tried ans tested remedy that such women should consume bowlfull of corn cereals like CornFlakes with fresh milk early morning for breakfast.
Also. first thing in the morning she should consume a glass of milk in which dried or fresh figs were soaked overnight.Eat the figs too. This provides an excellent nutrition boost for the day.
If she is consistent in this, she should feel the symptoms wane away.
And then ofcourse, dont discount the important task of seeing her Doctor, she should get a thorough check up .
I wish her the best of health!

Its very possible she may need hormones. My mother in law had a partial also and they left her ovaries. They ended up dying and she soon went on hormones. This DOES happen. I also had a historectomy 5 yrs ago, and they left my left ovary. I too, needed hormones just 4 yrs later. BUT I didnt have to stay on them. It must of given my ovary the boost it needed, cuz Im good to go again. The hot flashes and the skin sensations and all, the moodiness can be a real pain.
She can try the over the counter meds, I forget the name of the stuff, but it didnt help me. It may for her tho. It may not be menopause. Have her talk with her doc.

If she still has ovaries, then she is still producing female hormones. Yes, she will still experience menopause. Alleve will help. There are also lots of over the counter products now that help specifically with menopausal symptoms, try GNC and CVS.

Who told her she would not experience menopause? There are some supplements that are reporting easing the symptoms. The best thing she can do for herself is to get rigorous exercise daily. This eliminated my symptoms all to gether and I feel even better than I did 15 years ago, I am your mothers age!
