A counter-culture is a group within society that reject the norms of their society.

It was used a lot in the late 1960s to describe those living in communes or those into the drug culture -- but could just as well apply to the Beat Generation of a decade earlier.

It could also be used to descibe movements -- like the Black Panthers -- that wanted to create a different society for subgroups.

Some might say it applies to religious groups -- particularly offshoots (like the Mormons who want multiple wives).

It can also apply to people who enjoy the swinging life style as well.
