There were 1 and 2 rand gold coins issued for the collector market, not for circulation. They were the same size and weight as the British half sovereign and sovereign. Here is a link to more info (this is the web site of a dealer that has them for sale):

The Krugerand - it is fixed to the gold price and so it fluctuates. Google Krugerand Price to find it's price at any time. It's still available and is a beautiful coin.

The British Gold Sovereign is similar. Beware of some types of gold coin though as they are all partially alloyed with other metals. The Krugerand and the British Gold Sovereign are the two that contain the highest purity of gold and are still practical.
