ahhahahahahaha T!!!! A chav is like in irish terms - a knacker! Usually the either o.d on the adidas tracksuits with adidas runners and adidas socks with a baseball cap - or it can the other way as in too much burberry - daniella westbrook is prime example.

This was asked before & yes, it's a British term. There were many answers & examples, my favourite being CHAV=Council House Adult Vermin
If you look at Jade Goody, Britney Spears, Wayne Rooney & Colleen Whatever, you'd get the idea.
I want to take the term to America so it can get an even wider audience. ;-)

Yeah its a British Term it stands for council housing and something(cant remember what the v is for), but generally its a stereotypical term that is banded about for people from a disadvantaged background, who wear either tracksuit bottoms and tops, or burberry shirts. They are also stereotyped as being quite rowdy and unintelligent. The equivalent of "trailer trash" should you hail from the states. That is all - Dan.

i think all of you who label people who like to wear tracksuits and baseball caps are really sad. i think its pathetic to say people who wear clothes like these are scum and useless, maybe a lot of them are but a lot wear these clothes coz they feel most comfy in them instead of wearing clothes some silly magazine article has labelled as fashion. there is some cheesy fashion out there these days, maybe that's why they wear tracksuits coz of the cheesy **** all you funky house, pretty boy'd, spiked bleached hair present yourselves. I'd love to see some of the bland stuff some of you on here wear. scarves, ripped jeans hahahaha, what do we call these people? i call em pretty boys. these people spend more time in the mirror than girls! so whats that sayin? and jus because i have made this valid point i bet your labelling me as a 'chav' which is really sad as
all Ive done is stick up for people who like to dress in tracksuits and are not 'chavz'. its sad enough you have to even bring this up is there nothing better you can all talk about it. personally i think your all scared of these 'chavs', they intimidate you and you dont like that so your instinct reaction is to put them down because of the clothes they wear. get a life!

a chav is a Scottish term but the English and the welsh have also used it, and give it its own meaning which is usually a teenager (boy or girl) who think they are the business they smoke, swear and wear a load of jewelry i.e rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and have dyed blonde hair, or streaks

I suppose to an american, you would probably need to think in terms of 'trailer trash' mixed with the 'projects'
Chavs live on state benefits, in government housing and generally just hang around getting drunk / high / stoned and breeding at an alarming rate.
