A phrase is a group of words without a subject and a verb:

Ex: in the tree, about three o'clock, to be ripped to shreds.

A clause is a group of words that does contain a subject and verb. There are two major types: independent clauses and dependent clauses. Examples:

*he often went to the beach
*because tomatoes taste good
*the young woman liked studying psychology
*although Laura wanted to ride the horse
*the committee voted to censure the attorney's behavior

Each of these unpunctuated groups of words is a clause, but some are independent and some are dependent.
