Just reading the BBC news page.(check this link)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/2/hi/africa/5333910.stm >

and it said that India has the highest number of AIDS sufferers in the world, not SA. Upon further research I found many sites giving the following figures SA 5.5 million, India 5.7 million.
I mean this is hardly good news, but it's something to point out to the racist bigots who come online moaning about the black goverment doing nothing, and blaming AIDS on them. You'll also see in the link our Minister of health, who incourages garlic for Aids, is being sidelined.(Yipee) Hopefully they'll get an expert on it now, and we can start to slow down the spread of this gastly disease, and the stigmas and taboo's that go with it.

You guys and girls are also right, about the average per population. India is bigger, so yes, it is a drop in the bucket.
But at least these are more accurate figures than the ones that where trown around on here over the weekend.

Thank you for your work in this! At least there is one positive thing about this!! lol...but i do understand where you are coming from and thank you for that good article!

I think it is great news that our Minister of Health will be flanked! Who the hell mixes garlic and beetroot to cure AIDS!!! That is rediculous!

5.5 million people with AIDS! I cant believe it! I never thought it was that big an amount! This must stop! It is really rediculous and unnecessary!

Hmmm...very interesting subject. Yes, I hope our mininster of Health gets fired, our President realises people don't get AIDS because they are poor and that many and many people in our country need to be educated as to the truth about how AIDS is contracted, and how to properly and effectivly combat it - not by believing by sleeping with a virgin you will be cured..and that more will be done to give people ARV's and how to live healthy...

Surely you should know that a percentage is a better measure. If this were used in the AIDS census you would realize that in fact Swaziland has the highest in Southern Africa i.e. 32%. About Tshabalala-Msimang, her ignorance shouldn't be seen as a reliable statement of what we South Africans think of HIV/AIDS.

Yeah, but India has a population of over 1billion people, which is 22 times greater that the current population of SA (standing at around 45million).

The more relevant stat to look at would be percentage of population infected. So using the info in your question about the total number of people infected gives:

India has 0.57% of its population infected.
SA has 12.22% of its population infected (21 times greater than India in relative terms).

Makes pretty grim reading...

I dont really care , I just think we all need to get a grip and win the war on aids worldwide. Thats my concern. Get that "miracle" vaccine out in the world pretty damn quick. Get everyone sorted.

agree with Latin Techie. we need to work together instead of making racist and stupid comments to help sort out the problem. demonstrations in SA have already gotten Mantu sidelined, which is great. a pity she wasn't fired. let us all work together.

Hey Anria - you're right, babe. 5.7,5.5 - what's point 2 million people dying between friends, right?

I have very bad news for you, sweetie - the emperor is not wearing any clothes at all.
Now why don't you go hand out some garlic to the AIDS patients?
I knew that garlic keeps vampires away, but had no idea that it cured AIDS, too.
Thanks for the interesting info from your Minister of health!

Anria try comparing India's population of approx.1,080,264,388 as of July 2005 to South Africa's of approx.44,344,136 as of July 2005. The amount of people infected in India is like a drop of water in a bucket when compared to their population.

EDIT:
Also remember that the figures you give are also only approximates. By my calculation there should be about million South African who don't know they have AIDS, simply through ignorance or fear of getting tested.
