I remember it so vividly. In the beginning. Soon after the start of the war in Iraq,.
"We are NOT an occupying force," came cries of denial from Donald Rumsfeld, and the Generals, and the President....
Denials. Denials.
But I think I already knew differently. When US troops stormed into Downtown Baghdad,, and I saw that clip..of a U.S. soldier, hoisting a United States flag......
Oh it was soon taken down. But the image was still there. It was such a humm, BOLD and disturbing move.
Then came Colin Powell, after weeks of denial also, letting it slip that we were "occupying" Iraq.
And then Bush.,denying, denying. Continuous assurances that we were there "to bring freedom and democracy" to the Iraqi people.
But finally relenting.
"Yes, we are occupying."
When will we learn....
or no...
its more that our government has to stop lying to us. I thnk, even as we might not like what they do, that if they do it and not lie about it, this government would be far more respected.

You're a genius for putting it like that. It is true however that you can occupy a people but you cannot occupy their souls ! The human soul is sovereign territory and no George Bush, Hitler, or Stalin can ever change that. The rules of the universe do not yield to a paltry earth superpower.

Well, actually you are mistaken. Lots of occupiers have successfully taken over lands when they were outnumbered. The entire Western Hemisphere is a good example. There were a lot of people in the Americas when Europeans arrived. I hate to break this to you, but the occupiers won. If you need another example, take a look at every island in the Pacific Ocean. All of them were taken over by occupiers. If you'd like a non-Western example, look at Northern Africa. It is primarily occupied by Arabs today. That was not the case a millennium ago. Arabs in smaller numbers ran the indigenous people out of North Africa.

So, your point is taken but incorrect. I suggest you do a little more research into history.

We're not occupying the country, we are not there to take their country. We are there to protect the country until they're capable or protecting themselves. And the actions of an low rank marine hoisting the american flag speaks for a nation? We weren't allowed to even have flags on our tracks. And if you recall that, then you should recall the other flag that was raised shortly afterward signifying that they have their country back.
