If you can answer this one, you've got a Nobel.

There is a ton of research done currently on poverty traps - not only continents such as Africa, but even on US states like Mississippi.

Currently, we know that growth is a feedback loop, either positive or negative.

If growth is strong in an area, it will tend to stay that way unless something upsets it.

If growth is weak, the "smart" people will leave for the places where it isn'----thus creating a "brain drain" and leaving the poor areas poor.

There also is a lot of research being done on the agricultural industry, especially based on the South American and China (which are newly developing areas).

Why is it we assume that poverty has causes and prosperity just happens. When obviously the opposite is true. Afther all poverty can be achieved with no effort what so ever, and properity requires at least some minimumal effort.

People in rural areas can sustain themselves at a subsistence level with very little effort. Some of them like it that way.

In an agrarian or other land-use rural area (ie, farming, mining, forestry), chiefly it's due to market imperfections and imperfect information.

For instance, substantial production may be possible, but distribution may be lacking (ie, it costs more to transport product to the nearest market than would be allowed for profitably, and since all production is entitled to some level of profit to compensate for risk, there is insufficient compensation), or markets may be disjointed, or the resources available may themselves by insufficient (rainfall, water table, etc).

Ultimately, education is a concern, as well as access to health care and other intangible goods; however, without a base of wealth, it is difficult if not impossible to sustain such these goods.

Povertyy is the normal human condition until there is economic growth. Economic growth needs towns to flourish in because of collective infrastructure and 'networking' opportunities created by e.g. airports, larger businesses, universities, and internet connections. Rural areas get left behind.
