Please give more details, as I have no idea what you're asking about. What is your pick up switch supposed to do?

Okay, I see your additional details now. The switch is either dirty or broken. Does it feel normal when you switch it? If it feels normal but doesn't work in the top position, then there's a good chance that it's dirty. Get a can of switch cleaning spray at Radio Shack and spritz it a couple of times into the switch from the top. Flip the switch back and forth 20-25 times and check to see if that fixed it.

If that doesn't fix it, you'll need a new switch. If you have a Strat or Tele style guitar, the entire pickguard assembly will need to come off. It's not that hard, really... it just looks scary.

There is a possibility that the pickup connected to the top switch position has died. If so, a new pickup will cost more than a switch. Does the sound change when you switch from the bottom to the center position? If the sound changes, then your pickup is fine. If the sound doesn't change, the pickup is probably shot.

Switch may be worn out and have a dead spot...may need to replace. You should able to take it to a shop and have it tested for nothin'
