The F keys or function keys are keys that can be programmed to perform a function. They were added to computer terminals to simplify the work data entry employees by allowing the programming of repetitive tasks. Some keys or and key combinations are still in use (F1 – Help, Alt+F4 – Close, etc.) but they are not as important as they used to be because most functions can be integrated with a program and be activated with a mouse click.

F1 is usally the Help key in all programs. The rest have different functions depending on what program you're using. For instance, F8 is used to enter Safe Mode during startup and F2 is sometimes used (in place of Delete) to enter BIOS setup, also at startup. If you're in Word or IE, you can use the Function keys as hotkeys and set the command-to-be-executed by each yourself. Press F1 and look up Function keys in the index.

If he's been taking area in with the F1-12 keys and the laptop's been contained in the BIOS area or booting, he may have screwed up something with the boot settings. take a seem contained in the BIOS area and word the boot order, it will be set as well from the HDD. If that would not artwork, enter threat-free Mode and use device restoration to go back the laptop to a date before that occurred.

In short, the functions that the function keys perform will vary from application to application. Check the manual and help files of the software you are using to find out what that function, if any, is.
