Many people consider the Eniac to be the first electronic computer but there were many electromechanical computers before then. But the Eniac was the first computer to make total use of vacuum tubes instead of a mix of vacuum tubes and mechanical switches. The Eniac was delivered in 1946, in 1947 it was transfered to the Aberdeen Proving Ground (Maryland). THe very first commercial computer was the British Ferranti. I weighed 2.5 tons and had a memory of 100 mg. It was delivered in Feb 1951

I think the Eniac was made in the 1940's or 50's. But there's no question it was the first! Basically, it was a room-size calculator, with binary lights instead of the LCD we find on calculators

I think during WW II a lot was done to develop cpmputers. In those days they used vacuum tubes, not chips, so they were as big as an entire room.
