That morning I remember getting in a fight with my wife- a really bad one where we threw every name at the book at each other. At the time we were homeless and always fighting. Anyways, I stormed away and caught my bus to my menial, minimum wage job.

It was during that bus ride (starting at 5:45 AM PDT) that the unthinkable happened.

I got to work at about 7:00 PDT and was told by a co-worker, erroneously, that "The Empire State Building was on fire." I thought to myself "that sucks", and went on with my day. Due to business being slow I only worked 4 hours.

On the bus ride back "home", everyone was quiet. I had just figured that it was the time of day and not too many people on the bus.

I got back "home" and my wife was watching her handheld TV. I heard something about all commercial flights being grounded and I asked my wife "Why are all the flights being grounded?" She asked me "Didn't you hear?" and I replied "Something about the Empire...." I saw the image of the towers collapsing on the TV before I could finish my comment- which I knew instantly was erroneous.

Suddenly, all our petty issues, even being homeless, paled in comparison.

i am australian and it is 11:25pm here in about an hour 5 years ago i was watching some late night {early morning over there} talk show live and in the background, through the window i could see the twin towers, i saw the first plane as it hit, and the man just turned and said, oh my god, oh my god, i think the world trade centres exploded, then the cameras zoomed in on it and that is the static view that most of the channels were using, so i sat up all night watching all the news channels, but in particular the people who in the end jumped out to their deaths has ever since stayed with me, i was really hoping that everyones death was fast and peaceful, i always think what i would have done if i was in the plane or in the floors above who never had a chance......... i hope i never have to make that decision, i am going to new york next year and will definitely pay my respects.....

May God Rest Their Souls

I was in college still and I woke up to the radio, which would usually be the local annoying "shock jocks," but I heard Dan Rather instead. This was RIGHT as news was breaking about the pentagon strike. That was all I heard though, nothing about NY or the terrorist implications. I heard that a plane had crashed into the pentagon and figured "oh, wow, that's a horrible freak accident" and was about to hit snooze when I heard my roommates out in the living room. One of them was crying, the other one kept repeating "oh my god oh my god"

I went out and when I finally realized what was going on, I was totally shocked. We spent the next few hours glued to the tv, because it was all we could do really.

I was the skin care make up director for a large company and was supposed to teach a class in fall trends for the make up line we carried. So I was in the basement of this building where we were holding the class waiting for a large amount of very puctual people to show...and I waited and waited and started the class late with only 10 showing out of 50 RSVP's. Then people started trickleing in. Some had been crying, some just looked drawn, but no one said anything. Finally I just stopped the class to ask if everything was alright (this group of people usually are very vibrant and chatty) that is when they told us. So we stopped the class and went upstairs and plugged in a tv...just in time to see the second crash.
We all decided to go home and get our kids out of school. One lady (the make up rep) had to go all the way back to Detroit to get her dog ready. He was trained to be a body search dog. Another had to rush home to see if she could get hold of her sister...her brother-in-law worked in one of the towers.
I feel like much of that day and the days following were a big class and study for me..as I knew I would have questions from my 4 kids and I had to be able to answer them in a reasonable way to each age level. We are an emotional family anyway and even though we didn't have any direct connections with any of the heros that died that day, we were so sad for a very long time.

Actually recall my mom calling me and she was in tears and I thought something had happened to someone in my family naturally. She told me to turn the tv on I can remember saying What channel she said It doesn't matter, I saw the news when they were filming the first plane into the first tower and before I could blink, the second one had hit. I can remember thinking this is not happening, then I had to go to work and all day I was scared and so upset and that feeling that day has come back to me many times, not only on this day.
GOD Bless Our Country!

I had returned from my private 10th std. Maths & physics tutions and went crazy to see the WTC falling down live in front of my eyes on the TV. The next day everyone in school was discussing about it. I really felt very very sorry for those people, as somebody lost a father, a mom, brother and who not, Thank God I was not there in those but even then to understand the pain and suffering one must put himself in that event for a while, so that hearts of the dead rest in peace and harmony.

I was at the dentist's office sitting in the dental chair. The TV was on in the room and I saw it. When I got out to the waiting area, everyone was gathered around the TV including a lot of the dentist's nurses. I had to stop by the mall afterward and it was so weird, the mall was deserted.

5 years ago today I went to work and a man I did not know ran up to me and asked if I had heard what happened.
I worked in a pediatrician's office Somebody ran home and got a little tv which we set up on an exam table and we all watched.
My son was in school and I wanted to go and get him.
I had to stay at work though and that is what I did.

Teacher in a middle school. Fellow teacher came up and whispered in my ear America was under attack. We weren't allowed to discuss it with students and had to catch the news as much as we could between classes.

I remember telling people at lunch this would change our lives.
