series. This once again presented the question...What on earth is the difference between a mammoth and a mastodon??
Also, does anyone else just skip over the sex parts in these books?
They get a bit ridiculous!

Mastodons or Mastodonts are members of an extinct genus Mammut of the order Proboscidea; they resembled, but were distinct from, the woolly mammoth. Unlike the woolly mammoth, they did not belong to the family Elephantidae.

you've already got an excellent explanation of the mammoth/mastadon question, so i'll just comment on the books.........i loved clan of the cave bear, and the mammoth hunters after that the books are good but not great. still a fun read and you do get invested in her characters lives. being a gay man the ick factor of the sex scenes causes me to skim those parts lololol. i read these when i was in my teens so they're good memories. enjoy, and i hope you recover quickly!!!
