I think there is something in what you are saying, but even if you get the religious leaders talking - and I think that that would indeed be possible, educated people are comfortable talking to each other usually - there are still the breakaway fundamentalists who stir up trouble.

Sounds like a good idea to me! The politicians cannot solve all the worlds problems and in many cases, they are the cause.
Whether the 'religious leaders' would be willing to go along with this plan, however, is questionable. We cannot expect them all to agree.
Many times in the past, when one religious person disagreed with the next, instead of resolving their differences, they just split their religion in two.
Like when Henry VII broke away from the Catholic church and set up the Church of England because he wanted a divorce and the Pope wouldn't let him....
Even if the religious leaders did agree, it is uncertain whether the religious fanatics would also agree, since they take their lead directly from the holy books, which are all open to interpretation. (World created in six days, come on! ??)
Regarding your comment on battlefields and willing participants, unfortunately, the time of battlefield warfare is now over. Urban warfare and terrorism mean that innocent people will continue to die, until war itself is over.
I propose that we all, each and every one of us, take responsibility for our own actions. What can we do? A little at a time, surely - but it all adds up!

Unfortunately, a solution is not that simple. Why not just declare war zones where people can go and blow themselves up and leave the rest of us alone. Not going to happen.
When it comes to religion, it is impossible to get every one to agree. If you could, there'd be only one religion in the world. This holy war being waged by Islamic extremist will collapse on its own. It may take years, but it will collapse. All we can do in the meantime is protect ourselves as best we can.

how can you get the worlds religous leaders together, when half of them dont belive the other half hav a right to exist. The mullahs in Iran want to destroy jews and christians alike and its not just them buddists in Sri lanka are responsible for the destruction of catholic churchs and even in the liberal west we have christian fundimentalists that wish to ban all other religons , so it would seem as if politics is the only answer, god help us all!

Or at the very least have them start advising the political parties on this matter.
