I want to buy a synth keyboard which can make cool sounds and weird custom effects which would suit playing in a rock/indie band.

Examples - Radiohead, The Automatic, Keane, Muse

I'm looking for something cheap (probably not possible!!!!)

Just a small thing (doesn't even need to be fully size keyboard) that may perhaps even only make a few noises with custom controls, something just to experiment with and then perhaps buy a different one or something better. Is this possible?

You don't know what you are up against do you? LOL!!! It depends on your budget, and it depends on what you want to do. You can get an analog synthesizer, but the really good ones are VERY expensive - $3,000 or so. If you want to get something with a LOT of sounds for a reasonable price, try getting a used Roland XP-30 --- it has 1,402 sounds built-in, can be expanded, has "MIDI" so it can be hooked up to other keyboards and computers. You can also get a keyboard that will work with a software program on a computer. I own a Roland XP-30 and its pretty good, which is why I mention it, but you really need to go to music store that carries a lot of keyboards and try them all out because you also have to like the way the keyboard "feels" - some of them will be more suited to what you want. Good luck! BTW: the "XP-30" could be considered to be "entry level professional" and there are a lot of them around so getting a used one shouldn't be too hard.

My friend Mik makes a device which produces some very odd, custom sounds. On his website he has some sound files to download.
He venues quite a lot around Europe.
Email him...he will advise you.

i will try this noise that feels like a pterodactyl. yet i won't have the ability to particularly clarify it. whether the final reaction to that's, "WHAT THE HELL?" you could desire to get the Pooter if those conferences shop springing up. Google Pooter. Exaggerated coughs sneezes and farts are continually great!

Try and get your hands on an old MOOG. They're expensive now though, but have a look on ebay. (They were used on the old Doctor Who theme)
