It is a cultural issue, it is stronger than the individual. It is true that many intelligent people do believe in god, that's basically because they were brought up to believe in god and it has become part of their persona. People need to believe in the existence in a supreme being in order to justify their existence and ease the fear of dying by thinking of life after death and god.

Well i doubt belief is only limited to the dumb lol. I know many intelligent people who are religious, but I don't see that as a shortcoming (despite my own atheist). They’re the ones who are smart enough to make their own personal decisions as to whether they believe or not, not let it be made for them by traditionalist society or by a postmodern culture that think they’re above belief.
It's the unintelligent believers that frighten me.... I mean, they're the ones who are so consumed by religion and are uneducated enough to think it's god's will to bash gays or ostracise interracial couples, etc etc.

They can't really believe in the controlling bit, otherwise their god would be what they call "evil".
Humans want explanations, and most can't or don't want to accept that life just is, with no sense or goal to it. So they go for an easy answer, which is ready made and shared by so many, "it can't be wrong".

I doubt you could recognize an intelligent person if you managed to meet one. God controls nothing, He created the universe and gave us all the free will use our intelligence or act like you. Your specially developed insanity excuses you actions and explains your boredom with life. God will get you for that!
Read a book, go to a movie, take a course but stay off the Internet unless you want God to know exactly what you are doing. In other words go to Hell!

Interesting question, I guess it is because they have to have a reason to justify what happens in their lives, because they cannot explain ti to themselves. I personally believe that there is a higher order of intelligence out there somewhere that we do not yet understand & for want of a better description we call it god.
Don't forget that for many so called "primitive" races that european man was regarded as a god when first sighted

I ask myself that same question. I have learned, that humans have a great need to believe that there is some greater power and that that greater power is in control, with a greater plan, on the things we have no control over. The idea of god serves a purpose in their lives.

because some people have had it drummed into them from starting school, like my kids, the first year they always have a nativity play about baby jesus.
plus some people need to believe that when they die that they are going somewhere, that there is an after life and that there is a meaning to life and the universe.
personaly im not so much a believer in idols(god, alla ect), just that we are an energy which never dies, spiritual stuff.

I agree, it is very frightening!
But I don't think they should be called sane and intelligent people for believing there is a God anyway

And why do those otherwise sane and intelligent people ask for his help when they are in deep trouble or in danger, its is generally the first thing people say when they are in either of those situations, 'god help me' weird isn't it, they don't believe in him but they ask for his help when in need.
