not all banks do it. Halifax do they charge 12quid but it still takes 2 days to clear better than 5 mind lloydstsb don't do it but if yr lucky they'll ring and check it will clear then let u draw against it

Much depends upon the cheque. If it is a govt. cheque they don't charge you anything. You can diretly encash it and they will collect in due course. This is also the case of cheques from known trustworthy firms(especilly so if they are also account holders in the bank but this is not absolutely necessary). The matter revolves round creditworthiness.

My bank in the US does not place a hold on checks. I deposit a check in the bank and it shows up immediately as available balance.

In US it clears immediatly, electronically.
