Many people died around the word on 9/11 for a variety of reasons. I think you are talking about people who died on 9/11 due to terrorist attacks in USA. Here are the figures:
2,973 people confirmed dead + 19 hijackers + 24 listed as missing
The 2,973 people killed included:
* 246 on the four planes
* 2,602 in New York City in the towers and on the ground
* 125 at the Pentagon.
Among the fatalities were:
* 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters
* 23 New York City Police Department officers
* 37 Port Authority police officers
Probably there were more people who died due to shock and trauma. The figures don't include Sikhs who were mistaken as Arabs and killed in racial attacks.
