Commercial communications are always to keep in touch without opening up, for obvious reason !
Really no harm, if the residue of such action does not cause a reaction, or a sense of guilt within us. We can tell the touched person our true intentions, purpose of keeping in touch, so that he / she knows, that opening up is not to be expected !

Well if i was considering becoming close this person, then yes i more than likely would.
There are those i keep at arms length simply because i do not trust them, and can see they have an alterior motive for being involved in the circle of friends that i am in, there are others i have drawn to me, because i can see them remaining to be part of my life for a long time.
Its something you need to put time and effort into though, to really consider, making a seriously informed decision about.

If by open up, you mean share the intimate details of my life, yes, I'd keep in touch with no intention of doing that. In fact, I'd prefer it that way, and I hope I don't have to listen to their innermost feelings either. There's no reason that two people who enjoy talking with one another, who enjoy discussing books or arguing politics, have to exchange a lot of pipe dreams or whiny worries in order to be friends.

Some people are wonderful as friends without ever being good, close friends. Sometimes you just need someone who loves golf to go golfing with you. Or who loves shopping to hit the sales with you. We enjoy companionship, and there isn't the need to open up to every casual friend.
Not all friends are meant to be or should be "best" friends.

Depends a lot on what you mean by "open up." Details please. It's easier to answer these types of questions with some context. Is this about someone in particular who is keeping in touch with you but not "opening up"? Can you provide an example?
