Animals can't really talk to each other in the sense that humans can, but they can communicate danger, happiness, hunger etc. with different noises.

So, the question is: do donkeys and horses have the same 'language'? If not, are mules (offspring of a male donkey and female horse) bilingual?

Mule trains have been offered at the Grand Canyon for almost 100 years and are the reason Phantom Ranch was built at the bottom of the canyon in 1922. The rustic cabins, which offer the only overnight accommodations below the rim, were designed by celebrated architect Mary Colter. The mules will happily haul you and your possessions into the canyon, but you must weigh less than 200 pounds fully dressed (the mules do not want to see you naked, apparently), be at least 4’7” tall, be fluent in English (the mules are not bilingual) and not be pregnant (no way, sister).

Looks from the source below that like they understand a form of sign & body language, which will probably be independent of particular mule nationality and can be applied to horses as well.

What on earth made you think of that?
I think they have there own 'language' half way between each. The sound would not be that of a donkey or a horse. I guess that they probably understand and are understood by both though.

If one goes by Aesop's fables, mules are definitely multi-lingual ! Even on a realistic note, they seem to be able to effectively communicate among themselves. And seem to comprehend the basic commands issued by their human masters.
...If other animals, including us human beings, cannot follow mule-speak, you cannot blame the mules for that !

No, you really answered your own question, they do not have the ability to talk or create language. A dog can communicate pain to a wolf but still would not be bilingual.

Mules understand a slap on the bum whatever language you shout at them.

No - no one can understand them, not even other mules. That's why they are so angry all the time.

I think that makes them bi-racial - but they speak the same language.
