They didn't.
Many millions of years ago monkeys, apes and humans had a common ancestor, that's all.
Let me illustrate this.
It's like when you and George Bush have a common ancestor way back in the 14th century. After that there has been no contact between the two branches (families) and you became who you are and Bush became who he is, two completely different individuals belonging to two completely different families.
It's not exactly like that, but you get the rough idea, right?

The earliest fossils classified as homo sapiens are some 100,000 years old. But it's just a matter of definition. Evolution is gradual.

We aren't "monkeys" - they have "prehensile tails". The APE "homo sapiens" (that's right - we are biologically classified as APES!!!) branched off in the evolutionary tree about 4 - 6 million years ago. The exact time will probably never be known.

It didn't happen but people will spend a lot of energy telling it did. Apes anyway.
I know don't make sense but they need something to believe in.
