Maybe the question should be; Are today's writers more productive than lets say Shakespeare or Dickens? I think the answer to your question is no. Same answer in regards to quality. I"m sure proof readers have existed forever. As other answers have implied if you can't think of what to write then it doesn't matter how you get it on paper.

The word processor could not have improved their quality of reasoning, but would have eased the process of transforming the reasoning into books.

Probably a bigger improvement for the publishers than the authors. Even today, some writers prefer to work on actual paper.
And think of all the literary artifacts we'd be deprived of. Somehow I don't see "Moby_Dick-rev3.doc" being auctioned at Christie's.

the quality may have been upped due to ease of writting, spell checking and ease of re-writing. hand cramps, back ache, etc. but the relationship between computer and writer and pen, paper and writer is so so different.
may not have anywhere to plug the lap top in the only real problem. especially joyce out in his little liquor land hut.
