Further to some answers recieved which insist its the gravitational pull of the moon.. GREAT, thats what we all have learned. That being the case, why doesnt this gravitational pull suck us up to the moon?? were made of mostly water are'nt we? do we feel any effects of this gravitational pull on our bodies?
I still feel there is some rocking of the earth going on.. Can you explain your gravitational pull with reference to smaller bodies of water, eg swimming pools? i think the rocking of the earth is caused by the earth wanting to go in one direction, (asteroid effect)and the moon pulling it in the other direction YES gravitational pull!! but with the rocking back and forths of the earth. But because earth is so huge we dont feel the rocking. Why is the earth still rotating on its axis millions of years after the Asteroid impact? theres got to be a more complex answer than simple gravity.. I think earth is rotating and rocking, somewhat like a continous vibration

Yes, you went to college, but so did the guys out
there claiming that the moon landing was a hoax. Then
there are the well educated people who believe that crop
circles are made by aliens, even after the earthly
perpetrators demonstarted how they did it. Then we have
those who believe in the hollow earth theory. My sister was
one of them with a B.A. in sociology. And we have more
educated people believing in the Bermuda Triangle
myths and big foot and the Loch Ness Monster.
You , my friend, are on the trail of pseudo science.

Because of the inverse square law for gravity, water nearest the moon is pulled with slightly more attractive force than water away from the moon. If the earth did not rotate this would cause a static bulge toward the moon and if the moon was much closer the earth and moon would compete for the water; but the big guy (earth) always wins in this tug of war. Many sea creatures are sensitive to the pull of the moon as the earth rotates and they open and close their shells even far inland as though they know exactly where the moon is. Because the earth rotates, the tidal bulge travels around the surface of the earth and it apperas to flow in and out of bays as the peak water level rises and falls there. Momentum can even vary tide height especially where the coast funnels the effect into an enclosed bay (like the Bay of Fundy). The moon also raises a lesser tide in the earth (crust) itself.

Simply put, we ARE sucked towards the Moo by its gravitational pull. But we don't have enough mass and are not fluid enough to notice the effect.

The timing and pattern of tides fits perfectly with the apparent positions of the Moon and Sun. Clearly you have some sort of issue with this, but the fact is it explains the tides perfectly adequately. Read up on spring tides and neap tides.

The Earth is NOT rocking back and forth. Drop that idea right now, it's perfectly obvious from astronomical observations that the rotation of the Earth is extremely steady.... at least on the time scale of tidal motion.

Gravity and the moon control the tides. Didn't you go to high school
