Definition Of Consolidated

Often, there will be several different cases pending within the court system that deal with the same legal issues, and where the factual situations are either identical or don't matter for the legal analysis.

For sake of efficiency and consistency, the court will consolidate the cases into one collective case. That way, the judicial rulings made on the legal issues will be the same for all the cases. This is most common at the appellate level, since the factual records are already resolved. But it can occur at the trial level, in some situations.

It means that two or more separate cases are combined for purposes of trial; usually because they have the same parties or arise out of a common set of facts.
