It can be serious in some cases. It could be (I repeat -- could be) what is called deep-vein thrombosis, a condition well-known among passengers on long-distance flights or car/bus trips.

Here is the link to the US Dept of Health and Human Services. It explains the condition and the treatment. (Note: This is a free, non-commerical website.)

If after reading the basic information you think you might have this problem, contact your doctor and explain the situation and ask if there is any way for him/her or another doctor to see you today. If not, contact you community health centre and ask for advice. The medical profession has a reponsibility to prioritise patients based upon medical urgency, and while your condition could be completely harmless, if it is a deep-vein thrombosis it is most certainly a high-priority case.

Meantime stay rested with you feet slightly raised, but SITTING UP, not lying prone, and move your legs and ankles as little as possible.

It's not serious as far as i know. My nan and my mum get swollen ankles and feet sometimes, when going on long journey's im not sure if its because of the pressure of the position of you being sat down for a long time. You may find that if you go on holiday you could get this too. I believe its to do with the pressure.

The best thing for edema (swelling) is to put your feet above your heart and get some rest. You've been sitting too long and your ankles took the brunt of that. Watch being up too much and keep those feet up! You can also put on tight stockings (socks too, if you have any) for the swelling and drink lots of water and stear clear of salt for a couple days.

If your ankles have swollen it is bound to be fluid. I would imagine this has been the result of three hours of inactivity in your legs, and the resultant poor blood-flow. The same type of thing that can cause DVTs. I would visit GP, have your blood pressure and heart-function checked, also get a sample of urine analysed. I don't think you should ignore this

Lay on couch with feet on pillow or pillows if need be (above your heart), drink 8-10 glasses of water each day, and the swelling will go down in no time. Happens to me all the time after I had my 2 kids.

It';s probly poor circulation, and the exercise you had you may have not beenuse do. I would see a doctor, and know.
But exercise regular, Try laying down with your feet lifted higher(about 2/4/inches higher.)than your body, if this helps you may hav epoor circulation.
For a tempory it works. A good soaking in corn starch and hot water is also good to see if it is only a rash or somthing you got near like poison oak.

Doubt it's serious, being in the car 3 hours can cause this.
Try propping your feet up, literally, and watch some TV. Swelling should go down.

if you cant a gp appointment while friday, then you could go along and have a chat to the practice nurse or the local pharacist who will beable to reassure you and offer advice.
Otherwise you need to have your feet elevated higher than ure heart to relieve pressure and reduce swelling
