If you want to manually change anything in the registry, you should take a backup of registry. Here is how you can do it:

1. Click Start, Run. Type regedit.
2. Click File and then Export
3. Give the file name and specify the location to save the registry backup file. The file would be saved as .reg file.
4. If anything goes wrong while manually editing your registry, you can restore the registry from the backup. You just need to double click the .reg file and the registry will be restored.

1. Using System Restore - Create a Restore Point.
Goto start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
A wizard will open, you just need to follow the steps.
This method is unreliable in case you want to rollback the registry changes made a longtime ago, in which case the System Restore might have purged that particular restore point - due to space constraints or due to a recent system restore point or even a Restore point corruption. Please remember, System Restore points get deleted for many reasons, making it unreliable, especially in the long run.

2. Backing up the selected branch of the registry by exporting
Click Start - Run - type regedit - click OK
Locate and then click the key that contains the value that you want to edit
On the File menu - click Export - select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg)

3. For backing up the whole registry, use the NTBackup utility to back up the System State. The System State includes the registry, the COM+ Class Registration Database, and your boot files.

4. if all this doesnot work .... try out this link..

Registry is the file which stores key values to the key components required for a smooth running of Operating system.

By Registry backup it means that it will backup of your registry at that particular time when ur system is running fine.

Once u install something or u corrupt ur registry then u can restore that backup to that point when ur registry was working fine (beware programmes install after backup may not work after restoring the backup).
To backup ur registry use "Regedit" command.

Click the start button
Select Run
Type in: regedit
The registry editing window will open
Click on File
Click on Export
Type in a file name and click OK

Also, you can create a restore point and it backs up the registry along with other important information that can be used to restore the PC if you have registry or system file problems.

Registry backup is there if you you lose/change/delete settings in your registry.

I am sure that there are programs that will do it for you. But, to do it yourself just do the following:

Click Start
Click Run
Type regedit
Click File
Select Export
Save the file to a location.

And there ya go. You have a backup of your current registry settings.

And of course if you need to reload it, then just choose Import and select the file.
