The craze started in the Science Fiction conventions out in California in the mid-1970's when the California fans discovered that Japanese cartoons contained adult material. Look at the oldest stuff, like Lensman, Dragonball,
and Wandering Kid (Urutsukidoji). What really jump-started current interest was high quality stuff like Ninja Scroll and Akira. With the advent of feature film acquisitions like Mononoke and Spirited Away, as well as TV features like Cowboy Bebop, the popularity has become truly nationwide. B.

Akira...is a 1988 animated film by Katsuhiro Otomo based on his manga of the same name. The movie led the way for the growing popularity of anime in the West, with AKIRA considered a forerunner of the second wave of anime fandom that began in the early 1990s. One of the reasons for the movie's success was the highly advanced quality of its animation. At the time, most anime was notorious for cutting production corners with limited motion, such as having only the characters' mouths move while their faces remained static. AKIRA broke from this trend with meticulously detailed scenes, exactingly lip-synched dialogue (voices were recorded before the animation was completed, rather than the opposite) — a first for an anime production — and superfluous motion as realized in the film's more than 160,000 animation cels...

Akira, Ghost in the shell(originally a video game), Voltron, Dominion:Tank Police, Dragonball. And does anyone remember in the late 70's early 80's "Spectreman"? Oh yeah, Robotech.

The whole craze thats going on now started because of what they air on Cartoon Network like Cowboy Bebop and Inu Yasha. Inu Yasha is a big one. Same with Naruto.

I'd have to say Dragon Ball . . . That show hooked millions of young boys onto something vaguely recognizable as anime and left them more open minded to shows like Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star, which were among the first widely known well-translated anime in the US.

i've been watching since the early 80's. it's been around way longer, i just think more and more people are getting turned on to it. i can't give 1 move the credit for that, but i'll say akira or ninja scroll. oh yeah speed racer or ultraman maybe.
