McDonalds is a company traded on the New York Stock Exchange (McD) so it is owned by it's shareholders, the people who bought it's stock. It has a Board of Directors and company officers all of whom are paid a salary.
Here's the stock report for McDonalds as of 9/11/06 http://www.mcdonalds.com/corp/invest/finan/stock.html
If you want to buy a franchise for a Mc Donalds restaurant, it costs about $200,000, and you have to put 25% down. Then you pay them 4% of your profits a month and a Percentage Rent, which is also a part of your sales.
Hope this helps.

Atleast 50% (probably more) of the restaurants are franchised (owned independently), while the other portion is coorperate. Don't think this dismisses standards: franchises still undergo rigorous inspections by cooperate and the local health department, and they are expected to go by McDonald's codes and rules, which are clearly printed in a book for every single McDonald's owner.

And don't just think anyone can own a McDonald's. About 12 years ago they changed the rules. In order to be qualified for the huge loan that they offer towards ownership, you must have worked in the company a total of ten years. I believe that you must have been a store manager for atleast 8 of those years.

Simply put, don't expect to own a McDonald's anytime soon.

Other franchise vs. corperate pros and cons:

Insurance (Corperate makes it mandatory for store owners who own over five stores to offer it)

Pay (Corperate follows guidelines, while franchise often pays less to cover expenses)

Awards (Corperate offers scholarships that franchise employees are allowed to participate in)

They are independently owned an operated. It's a franchise which means you basically buy the name, brand, and product, and make money off of it. The same original company owns chipotle. The first McDonalds was in San Bernardino CA.

It is a franchise. Lot's of different people own them. I know two such people! One is a neighbor and ex-NFL player (he owns two.) and one is a friend who owners three on a major highway. He just bought a huge boat and named it "Big Mac."
