Your uterus prepares each month to carry a baby by thickening the lining. When you release an egg (ovulate) and it is not fertilized, your body sheds this lining and starts over again, and it is your period. Hence when you miss your period, you might be pregnant.

Each month the lining of a woman's uterus thickens in preparation for a baby to grow there, when no egg is implanted, your uterus sheds it's lining and this is known as menstration.
