You do not display it at half-staff. That is only done when ordered by the President or a state Governor. You display it at full-staff if on a pole. A good example is the flag at Pearl Harbor. It is not displayed at half-staff on December 7th.

Also, it is not flown on a "mast", as many people have stated here. A mast is on a ship. Its a nautical term.

Display it at half-mast on 9/11 if you desire to honor those who died that day. Otherwise, display it at full-mast.

If I would be american, I would put flag stickers on my shoulder or arms, so that everyone can see it.

If you walk on street or so, I would hold a big flag.
