Mad world by gary jules, sung for the film Donnie Darko but originally written by Roland Orzabal of the British band Tears for Fears. It was released in 1982 and reached number 3 on the UK Singles chart, it was included on the album The Hurting which was released early in 1983.

Yep it certainly is called Mad World its a cover of a Tears for Fears song, done by a Gary Jules for this movie.....if you are able to get hold of the sound track there is an alternative version of the song as well.

TRUELYLO's answer is bang on with the goods and chronology. Tears for Fear, then Gary Jules. However I can't believe anyone hasn't put the excellent (insert further cynicism) cover version by Alex Parks on here. (Pop Idol I think she was from). Lol.
