You probably have the wrong jumper settings.

Most CD burners will be using an IDE interface (usually a wide grey ribbon-like cable). Most computers come with two IDE ports that can accept two devices each but they need to be told which device is master and which is slave.

IDE devices generally have three jumper settings. CS for Cable Select, MA for Master or SL for Slave.

Although the floppy probably also has a similar (but narrower) grey ribbon cable, floppy sockets are distinctly different to the cables you will need to deal with. Ignore the floppy altogether.

Have a look at the device connected to the same IDE ribbon cable as your CD burner and make sure that it's jumper is not set to the same as the CD burner unless that setting is CS on both. CS - Cable Select means the computer and cables will decide which is Master and which is Slave.

Worst comes to worst, set both devices to CS and that should get you going.

Check the jumpers on the back of the drive. Your old cd-rom drive was set to either "slave" or "master," and your new cd-rw drive will need to be set the same.

Did you install the driver? Read the directions that came with the drive, if you have them.
