And we just had a HUGE thunderstorm and I think we may have gotten hit by lightning. What are the possiblities of an fire popping up after I leave for work, which is 45 minutes away.....or am I just paranoid? I'm thinking about having my teenaged son stay home from school in case the house catches fire to save our animals.

We know that it messed up our AC, the fan started running and the unit was turned off.

On June 1st I was in a building hit by lightning, and the smell you describe could be ozone, or also melted insulation. A fire would not be likely as a delayed event, unless it was triggered by a short in a circuit that you made active (like you turn on your AC and that triggers it.

Take a flashlight and check any wiring you can in your attic or basement, to see if you can see any evidence of charring or damage. A direct strike, or even a near miss, could have briefly overloaded some current carrying systems in your house. If the smell persists, call an electrician to take a look. That will cost you, but the peace of mind will be worth it.

yes, let your son miss school! He'll be pleased.

Just leave the AC off until a repairman looks at it. You're probably smelling burnt wire.

Good luck...

If it were my house - I would be late to work - due to my further inpections of ALL wire circuits - with special attention to your air handler.
if you must leave - turn off the main breaker - or all of the breakers.

Nice hair. Let the kid stay home, just in case there's a hurricane or earthquake or something. Yea, that's the ticket!

consider your heater/ac system. I don't know who to call though. I've had fires in HVAC.

Yeah, seeing your update, call an HVAC guy. You might have some burned out parts.
