Pluto was demoted because it just isn't big enough to be a planet. It's that simple.

I think many scientists are basically bored and need to shake things up. Pluto as far as I am concerned is still a planet and there is a movement to have it officially reinstated (see: http://www.webpetitions.com/cgi-bin/print_petition.cgi?99500777 )
