I am a professional paranormal investigator and have done EVP research for years.

Of all the forms of paranormal "evidence" there are out there, I truly believe that this is the best. Photos and videos can capture things like dust particles and water, so you're never truly sure what you've got a picture of.

With EVP, there is a long history. Edison was adamently working on a machine to communicate with the dead... i.e. through EVP.

I've personally recorded tons of EVP's in my time. I've had some where I know the setting I was in, and know that there is no possible way to have recorded any interference. For example, I was recording in a local haunted restaurant, and asked "Is anyone here?". I got the response "Livinia." If you look in the historical records of the building, you'll find that Livinia just so happens to be the original builder's wife!

This form of phenomena is extremely hard to prove. The reason for this is while you are recording, even in a very quiet area you will get a "noise". This is due to the recorder itself... the device makes small sounds as it is functioning and the recorded "sounds" you hear are actually the noise of the device itself functioning (hums clicks and whirs of the inner mechanisms) and this is recorded.

This will occur no matter how expensive and sensitive the device used to record is. Everything electronic makes some sort of "noise" and will always record that noise.

When you hear the end product your mind will interpret these noises into words, sounds and even conversations from "beyond". This happens with every recording device. Sometimes even a small thing like you rubbing your chin or nose will get picked up by the device (you think it is quiet but it does get recorded) and creates a "noise".
