No, it's only a hostage situation if he demands an action. Otherwise it's assault and battery. If he goes through with it, he is guilty of Murder 2, at least, unless he'd been stalking himself or had a lot of priors, then it would be Murder 1 and he would be penalized to the fullest extent of the law ... um, er, well, maybe in absentia, then.

Typically one of the two personalities is a bad guy/gal. So if the bad person makes the threat then its a hostage situation. If the other one does it..it could be homicide committed in self-defence.
