I have been asked to purchase an internet shop and am wondering what benefits there is with this? I won't be purchasing the name of the shop only items/layout of shop. Then create a name for the shop and start selling.
What would you advise? It sells books and DVD (family related) has over 600 items how much you think it would be worth if anything?

Yes, you can buy online stores. People even buy domains, some domain names are worth millions! If the store has a lot of business and a good search engine ranking, then go for it. But if it's one of those make-money-quick schemes, forget about it. Those are bullsh!t.
