Sometimes the adverts backfire on the company.
One was the 99% pure beef beefburger by Birdseye, which cost sales, because most people didn't realise that the average burger was only 80% beef!
That said, I loved the Rutger Hauer Guinness ads. The start of a long line of artistic designed ads for Guinness.
The most successful advertising campaign of all time was the 1920's Coca-Cola Santa-Claus campaign. Prior to this, Santa wore either all red or green clothes, with a dark beard. After it, Santa became a jolly red and white clothed, friendly faced old man... Who smoked a pipe!

I think ads do work. I certainly have bought things after seeing adverts as its a way of becoming aware of new products.
Equally however, things like the horrible frosties advert make me never want to buy them again! EVER!

I would say definately yes! thats why so much money is spent on them. I would say the most successful are ones are the ones aimed at children or food ones, although I must admit I have been tempted to buy the latest new cleaning product after being swept away with promises of a sparkling oven after only one wipe !! (how sad am I?)
My favourite ad is the Mint credit card

of course TV adverts work !
companies spend millions every year across the globe to get the consumers - YOUR attention and most of them manage to do it just fine
you know how you watch a particular body wash or shampoo add on TV and then when you are in a supermarket next, you actually go looking for it ?
how you've wanted the new Nokia or the new car they show on TV ! see it works !
advertisers are innovative imaginative people and put the product in front of you in such a way that it grabs your attention, imprints itself in your memory and makes you think ' i want one of those'
my fav ad has to be the Herbal Essenses and some other beauty product ads... how they potray all those beautiful women with lovely bouncy hair and girls just run to the shops !! :-)
i also like M&S food ads ... yummm

Good ones do.
If they have a good product, a good ad will keep it in your mind almost forever.
eg.
That '91 Ford Escort ad keeps Escorts in pride of place in my mind, even though I admired the quatro's and integrales more from the previous era.
The ad tugged at my heartstrings and the Escort won my heart.
Same with that Landrover ad from the same time, when the car is pulling itself up the side of the dam. It didn't hurt that the defender was top of it's class anyway. But more than 15yrs later it's Landrover for me. (Those Evo Pajero's are damn good though)
Bad adverts work in reverse.

all you have to do is set a child somewhere between the ages of 3 and 18 in front of a TV on sat morning,, and see how many of the commericals they say " I want that," " that's what I need" ect ect...
Or even better have your man sit through all the new car commericals at the end of the year and then have him take a test drive and I promise he will go for the car that was on TV the most.

Yes, some work on some people some of the time. I am sure pizza delivery commercials really are instantly gratified a lot. My favorite is the "cut that meat" of Peyton Manning's from a few years back. It cracks me up, but didn't sell me anything!

There are so many over the years that have been good its hard to pick. Equally there has been an awfull lot of crap lol. In the last couple of years though id have to pick the square crisps ad just for being so odd. "A dog! With two heads.. and two bodies!"

Adverts work.
Otherwise companies wouldn't spend million getting them on TV.
They are always for things you don't need (otherwise they wouldn't need to advertise).
Sometimes they succeed in advertising other things as well as the intended product e.g guy who said he bought an Andrex puppy.
