He was beheaded on Herod's orders, but at the request of his new wife, Herodias. She was angry with John for criticising Herod for marrying her, the wife of Herod's brother.

'Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
And when a convenient day had come, when Herod on his birthday gave a supper for his lords, high officers, and chief officials of Galilee, and when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, 'Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it to thee.'
And he swore unto her, 'Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it to thee, unto the half of my kingdom.'
And she went forth and said unto her mother, 'What shall I ask?'
And Herodias said, 'The head of John the Baptist.'
And she came back straightway with haste unto the king and asked, saying, 'I will that thou give me at once on a charger the head of John the Baptist.'
And the king was exceedingly sorry, yet for his oath's sake and for their sakes who sat with him, he would not reject her. And immediately the king sent a speculator and commanded John's head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, and brought his head on a charger and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when John's disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
[Mark 6.14-29]

Mat 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force. Mat 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. Mat 11:14 And if ye are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, that is to come. Context is the biggest part of understanding what's going on in a lot of the Bible. If you look at all 3 of these verses carefully you see that Jesus says that John the Baptist is the prophet Elijah, that was said to come just prior to the coming of the Messiah. John was the very last of the Old Testement prophets. From the time of the first prophets till the time of Jesus death (note that it says till NOW, not till the day John died) there was violence in Heaven caused by the rebellion of Satan and his demons. As soon as Jesus, a perfect man, died and paid for our sins, the war between God and Satan was finished. Unfortunately, as with wars here on earth, the war may be over, but small battles may be fought for a long time after.

John the Baptist was beheaded in prison. The daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and pleased Herod who promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for. Prompted by her mother she said the head of John the Baptist.

The narrative states that although Herod himself respected John's authority and the clout of his following, to the extent that he would do John no further harm, Herod's bloodthirsty wife had other ideas, and persuaded her daughter, Salome, to trick Herod. At a party for Herod, Salome dances so beautifully that, according to the Canonical Gospels, Herod foolishly offers her anything she requests, so she asks for John's head on a silver platter, and so John is beheaded. Josephus states that Herod deliberately killed John to quell a possible uprising.

According to the bible he was imprisoned by a king whos named passes my memory. The king fell in lust with a daughters friend, to make his night of celebration full he asked the girl to dance for him, she was reluctant. The king begged her claiming he would give her anything eventually she stated " I will only dance for you if you bring me the head of John the Baptist. The king was not content and offered her Jewels etc. However the girl stuck to her request. And so the king complied and John was beheaded. Unfortunate

He was beheaded by King Herodes. Apparently he kept blabbin his mouth about the king living in sin with his brother's wife. His stepdaughter did this great belly dance and he offered her a prize for doing such a good job. He even offered her half his kingdom.

She didn't know what she wanted so she asked her mother for advice, she told her to ask for John the Baptist's head on a silver platter.

And she did.

Apparently a Belly Dancer had performed for King Herod (I think). He thought she was great and said he'd giver her whatever she wanted, thinking she'd ask for money or gold, but she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a plate so he had to honour his promise to her and therefore ordered him to be beheaded.
